Grass Seed Wounds

Grass seeds are a common problem, particularly during the summer months.

In recent weeks we have treated several dogs suffering with grass seed wounds!

It’s important to remove grass seeds from dogs/pets as swiftly as possible. If ignored they can cause a lot of pain and irritation. Check your pets over thoroughly after walking them in grass in the summer, especially if they have long or curly fur.

Although tiny, they have the potential to cause real pain to your dog. The seeds have pointy ends and are very sharp so they easily become trapped in a dog's fur and can burrow down the coat to pierce the skin. Unfortunately, in rare cases, the grass seed can go under the skin and travel to other areas of the body.

If you can try to avoid long grass during summer months especially during harvest time. Check your dog thoroughly after a walk, by running your fingers through their fur and checking inside the ears, in between the toes, and in the mouth and eyes. Try to ensure your dog is well groomed, especially around the ears and feet.

If your dog is suffering from grass seed wounds, if seeds are lodged in your dog’s paws, ears or skin don’t hesitate to contact us.
