Pet Travel in 2021

Posted: 24th August 2020

Planning to take your dog, cat or ferret to Europe early in the New Year?

It’s time to get prepared…

The UK government has applied to the EU commission to become a listed country post-Brexit. If they’re successful, very little will change to the current process of travelling to the EU with your dog, cat or ferret.

But there’s no guarantee…

We don’t know for certain that the UK will become a listed country. If the UK were to become an unlisted country, the process for getting your pet ready for travel would become more complicated, and would certainly take longer – a minimum of 4 months.

In the event of the UK becoming unlisted, the process of getting your pet travel-ready would include:

  • Having them microchipped
  • Having them vaccinated against Rabies (aged 12 weeks or older)
  • Your pet having a blood sample taken – 30 days after the primary Rabies vaccine
  • A 3-month wait between the successful blood sample and your pet being able to travel
  • An animal health certificate, signed by an official vet 10 days before travel

I’m travelling to Europe with my pet in early 2021.

What should I do?

Contact us as soon as you can and we’ll advise further. To make sure your pet is fit for travel early in the New Year, and in the event of the UK becoming an unlisted country, the process would need to begin no less than 4 months in advance of your journey
